New Year’s Concert, Gran Teatro La Fenice
The traditional Concerto di Capodanno in Venice – the most important New Year concert in the whole of Italy – will be celebrated once again at Venice’s magnificent opera house, the Gran Teatro La Fenice.
Broadcast on radio and television, year after year this concert has won over both the public and critics alike. An established musical celebration for 1 January (although the concert also takes place on 28, 29, 30 and 31 December), this event competes with Vienna’s New Year Concert in terms of popularity. However, in contrast to the latter, the Venetian concert has a programme which focuses on Italian music.
The programme for this New Year Concert is usually in two parts, the first being of orchestral works played by the Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice (not broadcast on television), and a second part in which the soloists and choir also participate. This second section includes the most well-known arias in Italian opera (by Rossini, Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini and Leoncavallo, among others) performed by great international lyrical performers, as well as ballet scenes and some popular songs. The concert’s finale is usually music from Verdi, with performances of his Va’ pensiero from Nabucco and Brindisi from La Traviata to see in the New Year.
A fantastic choice for the New Year at a truly beautiful venue.
